It's amazing that I'm enjoying watching major league baseball. It's not so much that I like the sport, because I haven't played baseball all my life; and I get the feeling that you can compress all the action of one game into a few minutes, and not miss a thing.
I think it's because baseball has this sense of history. You follow the story of the players, the ballclubs' glorious--or sordid--histories, and the fans' desperation for their team to win the World Series. All of these draw you in. It's drama in real life. And it does not get any better than this.
Watching baseball to me means to be alive. Whether you undergo an exhilirating rush with your team's victories or suffer agony with your team's lows, you were there. You were witness to this team's struggles.
You invest a part of your happiness with this team's success. And that means, as much as you cheer for your team to win, you also allow yourself to be vulnerable when they lose. And that, is what being alive truly means.
